ANIMALIA!
We love animals. There are many ways to show love, affection and respect for members of the "animal kingdom". A few examples appear here, with more to come ...
- Help teach children how to treat animals with care. Teach gentle handling, proper care, kindness and responsibility. Show them by your own actions.
- Being a vegetarian spares the lives of animals while at the same time reducing the many resources required to sustain a meat based diet. The environmental impacts of such dietary choices are significant as are the effects on short and long term health.
- Organizations like the Humane Society and others dedicated to animal welfare depend on donations from concerned individuals. Check on-line or in the yellow pages for how to make contact with such groups. Donate funds, in kind goods or your time to make a difference for creatures great and small.
- If you see an animal in need, lend a helping hand. Animals who are injured along a highway, abandoned or otherwise in need often have no way of getting help (food, shelter, water, etc.). Call your local animal shelter, vet, humane society or wildlife groups if guidance is needed. You can even pay for a vet service call to come pickup and care for an injured animal. Of course, exercise care in approaching an animal you don't know.
- Rethink relationships with animals from creatures here to keep people company or entertained to beings in their own right. Treat them with respect rather than as "property" to be bought and sold. Subtle actions like referring to an animal as he or she, rather than "it" have a broad effect on how we see our fellow beings -- and how we teach children and others to regard them.
