PUBLIC MATTERS IS AN EXCITING NEW INITIATIVE TO INFORM AND EMPOWER THE PUBLIC ABOUT MATTERS AFFECTING EVERYDAY QUALITY OF LIFE OF PEOPLE.

More and more people these days are "too busy" to get informed or involved when it comes to elections and issues of the day. Yet their lives are significantly affected by decision makers and by the actions taken, or not taken, on a range of issues.

Spearheaded by the Florida Public Interest Foundation, Public Matters is about making important and sometimes complex information fast, easy and convenient to access. The Foundation has tapped the latest and most innovative technologies to do just that.

Public Matters is also about informed democracy. Its focus is on providing objective voter information, in a manner stictly nonpartisan in nature. The initiative is designed to serve the public in multiple ways, including by:

  • Informing voters about candidates for statewide office
  • Providing candidates with a no cost alternative for informing voters of their positions, proposals, views and commitments
  • Better informing the public about issues affecting Floridians
  • Providing information resources on voter registration and the elections process
  • Educating voters about the roles and responsibilities of public officials
  • Informing Florida's youth about candidates, issues and the elections process

A highly innovative, first-in-the-nation approach is being utilized for conducting and "airing" the forums, with the goal of providing broad public access.

  • Live sessions will be available to the public-at-large simply by calling in to a telephone number that will be widely publicized throughout Florida .
  • Speaker phones will be permitted, enabling groups to assemble for shared listening and discussion.
  • The forums will be recorded and then made available on-line (through the Internet) and on telephone replay lines for those without computer access or who prefer to listen by phone.
  • The instant replays will be available round the clock, 24/7.
  • Downloadable audios will also be provided for use with mp3 and iPod players for even further uses.
  • This approach will enable maximum access and convenience for the Florida voters.
